Sedona Monthly’s June Fashion Issue

In the midst of bridal season, Liz Margin, makeup artist, and I enjoyed a change of pace, when we had the opportunity to work on June’s fashion issue of Sedona Monthly.  The concept behind the shoot was “Accessories to a Crime” where we created a look for the model that looked comic book / burglar inspired with a fashion flair.

The model, Erica, was such a beauty, and a pleasure to work with.  Check out the cover, and the outtakes, and be sure to pick up a copy, available on news stands nationally!  Thanks again, Sedona Monthly, for a fun opportunity.

Now Offering Hair Accessories!

I am very excited to announce the newest addition to my services: custom, handmade hair accessories.  My sis, Danielle, has been supplying local boutiques throughout Chicago and San Diego areas with her beautiful creations, and I finally convinced her to launch a bridal / special occasion accessory line.  Not only does she have an amazing selection of pre-made accessories (available to view under the “bridal hair accessory” tab) but she also specializes in customizing pieces unique to each individual need.

One of her specialties includes her kinzashi flowers which are hand folded, origami flowers.  The kinzashi technique was originally used in traditional Japanese hair ornaments. Translating this technique into her own unique esthetic, Danielle creates pieces that are timeless and chic.

There’s nothing that  completes the perfect hairstyle more than the perfect accessory.  Now thanks to Danielle’s talent and unique vision:  we can help brides to achieve a stunning hairstyle, complimented with a gorgeous and one-of-a-kind accessory.

Bohemian Inspired Style

As we enjoy the first days of 2012, brides-to-be and wedding professionals look forward to the trends that the upcoming season will bring.  While the last couple of years have brought a wave of vintage inspired style, this season we see that trend softening into whimsical, bohemian inspired looks.  These looks include soft, natural texture, loose organic styles, and feminine floral accessories.

You simply can’t go wrong with these romantic styles, that easily compliment a variety of dresses and venues.  Sedona, however, couldn’t be a more perfect setting for this kind of a look.  These understated looks emphasize individual beauty and femininity.  The best part?  You don’t need to fight your hair into a pristine shape, but enjoy its natural movement and texture.

My Soapbox on Bridal Accessories

“To accessorize or not to accessorize?” that seems to be a big question for brides this season.  Not to mention that once you decide to take the plunge, the next question is feather, flower, something sparkly?  My answer is, do what you want, and own it!  If you’ve always dreamed of wearing that sparkly princess tiara, then rock it girl.  There’s no other day that you get to make such a bold fashion statement as your wedding day.

The other question is where to find “the one” accessory that matches that fuzzy, perfect vision you have floating in your head.  Many of my brides have had great luck using etsy.com, also a personal fav.  What’s great about etsy, is you can find a lot of designers that are willing to customize that perfect piece to suit your needs.  These accessories from the etsy shop PowderBlueBijoux below made me smile.  Soft, elegant, fun, but not overstated, these pieces tie into the look effortlessly.

Now I’ll leave you with a  few pieces of advice from personal experience.  First, be careful that your veil and accessory don’t compete with one another.  If you want an intricately laced, cathedral style veil, then go with a very simple accessory if any.  Or you can always opt to ditch the veil after the ceremony and wear a flirty flower at the reception.  Vice versa, if you’re rockin a bold accessory, go with a more subtle veil, if one at all.  Second, be careful when using live flowers.  Your florist can tend to charge you an arm and a leg for a hair piece that tends to be too bulky to work in the hair, and the fastening that they come with can be impossible to work with.  Also many flowers lose their spunk quickly and the wow statement can get lost in translation.  Research flowers beforehand:  are they in season, are they the right size, shape, are they durable?  A few flowers that I love to work with are peonies (on left), cymbidiums (center), and dahlias (on right).

When choosing that perfect accessory, let it make a statement about yourself: the beautiful, quirky, one and only you.  What I mean is if you’re an understated kind of girl, go with something small and elegant, or if you like the bling, go glam all the way.  I say this because I can’t tell you how many brides I’ve worked with that have agonized over finding that oh-so-perfect accessory, only to ditch it on the wedding day, because it doesn’t feel right. There’s no other way to feel more beautiful, than to be your uncompromised self.
