Sedona Monthly’s June Fashion Issue

In the midst of bridal season, Liz Margin, makeup artist, and I enjoyed a change of pace, when we had the opportunity to work on June’s fashion issue of Sedona Monthly. The concept behind the shoot was “Accessories to a Crime” where we created a look for the model that looked comic book / burglar inspired with a fashion flair.

Say “I Do” to Undone Hair

You’ve found the man, the dress, and shoes, but you haven’t found the bridal hair that makes you want to say “I do.” So what do you do? My guess is you’re the kind of girl that doesn’t like the idea of a wedding “updo”: the kind of style that is teased and hairsprayed with ringlets to boot, like you just stepped off the set of a Shakespeare play. Then again, you want your bridal hair to feel special and unique for the big day. What’s the solution?

Say “I do” to “undone” hair. That sexy, seemingly effortless, but absolutely perfect hair that makes a woman look chic but rocker sexy, sophisticated but youthful. Ok, I’ve sold you, but now the question is, what does it look like and how do you get it?

How to? Take simple iconic styles and amp them up with volume and texture and voila: sexy, undone, wedding worthy hair!

1. Beach waves: Use texture styling product like Bumble Texture Cream or Paul Mitchell Texturizing Sea Spray. These products contain sea salt, which helps to duplicate that undone, beachy wave look. While every hairstylist has a preference of styling tool, I recommend the flat iron to create those perfect waves.

2.Messy Bun: This isn’t just your, “I just woke up and threw my hair up” kind of messy bun, but a strategically, messy and sexy look. First get those perfect beach waves mentioned above, then let your stylist work his/her magic. The key to this look are the imperfections, crooked part, face framing whisps are the unique additions that make this bridal look undone and beautiful.

My sis, Danielle, has been supplying local boutiques throughout Chicago and San Diego areas with her beautiful creations, and I finally convinced her to launch a bridal / special occasion accessory line. Ombre Hair for Brides

While ombre is a color trend that’s sweeping Hollywood, it can also be a great look for brides as well. Although some may quickly associate ombre with 6 inch roots and/or a drastic contrast in color, the best ombre color is achieved through a more subtle and gradual diffusion from dark to light. Why is this perfect for a wedding style? Not only can ombre be ultra soft and natural looking, but the color effect can really make an elegant hairstyle pop.

In order to achieve this look, I do not however recommend that you simply grow out your natural color and leave your ends light. Over time pre-lightened hair can get brassy and overprocessed looking and let’s face it, for most of us our natural color can tend to be flat and dull. For an ultra rich look, as pictured above, ask your stylist to give your base (salon lingo for roots) a jolt with a demi-permanent color that adds warmth and depth to your color, as well as a rinse to your ends, to tone hair (get rid of unwanted undertones such as orange) and add moisture and shine.

For your wedding day, consider going back to your “roots” and embrace a more natural color. Not only does ombre color provide dimension, with the caramel and blondes that you love; but it allows you to enjoy a root color that is similar to your natural color. With this option, a bride can really enjoy the best of both worlds.

Bohemian Inspired Style

As we enjoy the first days of 2012, brides-to-be and wedding professionals look forward to the trends that the upcoming season will bring. While the last couple of years have brought a wave of vintage inspired style, this season we see that trend softening into whimsical, bohemian inspired looks. These looks include soft, natural texture, loose organic styles, and feminine floral accessories.

You simply can’t go wrong with these romantic styles, that easily compliment a variety of dresses and venues. Sedona, however, couldn’t be a more perfect setting for this kind of a look. These understated looks emphasize individual beauty and femininity. The best part? You don’t need to fight your hair into a pristine shape, but enjoy its natural movement and texture.

2012 Trend Watch for Bridal Hair

While it’s important not to let trends dictate your final decision on your look for the big day, they can certainly provide inspiration and direction. A few popular looks in the Spring 2012 bridal market shows include modern beehives, sleek ponies, and dramatic chignons, but let’s take a closer look at how these looks can translate to real wedding day style.

Take a clue from the Vera Wang (left) and Pronovias (right) collections, where models showcased different takes on the chignon. While Vera Wang’s collection features a more deconstructed chignon/bun that lends a more modern feel, the look from Pronovias’ collection offers a more romantic option. One thing is for sure, both are elegant and sleek styles for a bride that wants to make a statement.

Another popular look seen on runways is a modernized version of the french twist. What makes this season’s french twist modern and fresh is the way that it’s soft and “undone” looking. By softening this iconic look, a bride can have the best of both worlds: a style that is classic and sophisticated, while also showing off a romantic and natural side as well. The Douglas Hannant collection showcased vintage inspired dresses complimented by a contemporary french twist, that offered a fresh look on a timeless style.

These inspirations from the runways can inspire brides to reinvent classic styles from buns and chignons to the french twist, allowing the perfect balance of trendy and sophisticated. Pros & Cons of a Trial Run

Should I or shouldn’t I have a trial run for my hair/ makeup? This is the agonizing debate that every bride must face. I’ll start by saying, that I haven’t had a bride that wasn’t ultimately happy with the way she looked on herwedding day, regardless of whether she had a trial run. (Now we know how this goes, now that I’ve said it, I’m most definitely jinxing myself.)

With that being said, I do strongly believe that your degree of satisfaction is measured by the quality of professionals that you hire. Just because your hair stylist gives a great cut and color, does not necessarily mean that they have confidence or experience in bridal hair design. (I have, however, known many happy brides who used their regular stylist) Before you consider a trial run with anyone I think it’s important to consider the right questions. Does this person have experience in this area? Do I like their portfolio of work? Would I want to look like one of the brides in their portfolio? Have I had positive interactions with them? These are important considerations that are just as vital as the trial run itself.

Ultimately the decision whether or not to schedule a trial run is often dictated by either the time (who has extra time when planning a wedding!?) or the expense (another number to add to that growing list!?). If these are problems that can be overcome, then I do recommend springing for the trial run, if for nothing else than your own peace of mind. If these problems are deal breakers, however, then take heart: as long as you can build rapport with the stylist, you like their portfolio of work, and you’ve communicated to them a clear picture of what you want, then you’re on track for success, and a beautiful hairstyle on your wedding day!

Break Out Style in “Breaking Dawn”

I may be among the last of Twilight fanatics to go see “Breaking Dawn,” but I finally dragged my husband to the theaters last night. And the highlight? Besides admiring both Jacob and Edward and mentally debating which is the hotter supernatural creature, Bella’s hair was what captured my attention for the majority of the movie. Not only was her color super natural and soft, yet rich and striking, but her style, though seemingly effortless, was perfectly smooth and sexy. For this season’s brides, however, I’m sure her most memorable style, was the wedding look hair stylist, Bonnie Clevering, created for Kristin Stewart to exchange her on-screen vows.

The look was the perfect mix of soft, sexy, feminine, and romantic. Bella’s effortless and understated style is expressed in a look that is elegant and “wedding worthy.” What can brides-to-be learn from Bella’s lead? That bridal hair doesn’t have to be stuffy and overly formal looking to be beautiful and make a statement. Go with a style that is authentic to you and that doesn’t give you a headache by the end of the night!

To achieve a look similar to Bella’s you want your stylist to use a “working” or “design” hairspray that isn’t to hard or crunchy and allows your hair to move naturally. Also be sure to include a few signature face framing pieces to soften the look. A low bun or pony will give you that romantic look, and a braid or soft side-swept waves will finish this whimsical look. One important thing to remember, however, is generally you don’t want to duplicate a look, but allow it to be inspiration for a look that is unique to you.
